Prom! Lingerie and Accessories.

So with a new month there’s always a new obsession at Bras&Honey! This month we've been going celebrating evening-wear and extravagant attire with the rise of the Prom and the planning of a Wedding!

Shapewear and Multiway Lingerie remains an imperative choice when styling up your gown and with High School Prom culture taking over the UK, Abigail and I reminisce about our own Prom experiences and choose how we’d do it second time round. So, this is officially the Bras&Honey girls guide to the High school Prom!

I’ll start with myself!

So I left High school in 2007 and the Prom thing was only just starting to get hype in Britain. Having gone through school with an assortment of unconventional hair colours and an avid love for Nirvana I wanted to use the Prom as an opportunity to express a more classically inspired side to my amateur style, channelling more Hepburn than Cobain. I remember the day that I went Prom Dress shopping with my mum. I’ve always been a secret Diva and the shape and style I wanted was firmly implanted in my head and wasn’t going to budge. Grecian and pretty with art deco influences. Now at 16 I was super skinny and terribly flat-chested and so after hours of trying on tailored dresses I became really frustrated. In the end, we visited the Vicky Martin section in Selfridges. The whole Vicky Martin glamour style has never stood out to me but by chance, we found a demure Navy and Gold Grecian inspired dress with elasticated bandeau that fit me perfectly. I styled it up with a vintage clutch and some art-deco inspired heels from Office which at the time seemed super tall in contrast to my Vans slip-ons; despite the modest midi-heel. I wore my ‘Casey’ nameplate necklace and vintage earrings and had a smoky bronze eye. When reminiscing about our Prom Dresses I searched to find it’s still available on the Website! They do however do it in a Maxi style too now which would now be my preference but it’s nice to know that seven years later my prom dress wasn’t so much of a faux pas. If I was to have my pick of the red carpet now, I’d choose Leighton Meesters 2014 embellished plunging Met Ball, 2014 dress. Despite the low-lunge the shape and detailing of this dress makes it one of my favourite red-carpet looks.

Onto Abigail:

I left High school in 2010 and attending an all girl’s school from 2005 to 2008 when the all boy’s school and our school were conjoined it was the first time our prom would have been mixed genders. My experience in high school was always a challenge having different groups of friends who didn’t have the same taste in fashion, music and lifestyle which made me not have one specific favourite type of band or style.

When the day came to start physically look for a dress then browsing on the internet, I only went to two different prom/bridal shops. The first one was Victoria Louise Boutique in Oswaldtwistle, although the dresses were stylish and beautiful none of them were me. The second shop I went to was Anne Whittaker. A quiet and simple shop with a whole range of eye catching bridal wear and a very colourful collection of prom/bridesmaids dresses. Originally I was looking for a simple plain dress, but then one of the dresses caught my eye. A bright and stunning hot pink A-line with a long length corset hugging at my hips and scattered silver sequins all over. As soon as I tried it on I know this was the dress for me. Although it was the complete opposite of what I would normally choose I fell in love with my prom dress. The owner of the shop was so helpful and kind, she made me feel so comfortable and confident in my dress.

Looking back I would not have changed my mind about my dress, however if I was to attend another prom like event I would be different on what dress to wear. The dress I would love to wear now is the Dior Couture red gown as seen at the Oscars worn by the wonderful Jennifer Lawrence.

When it comes to lingerie, achieving a flawless and polished look without the nuisance of straps, seams and minimal support is a must. Creating the foundations for your prom look relies on the perfect underwear; impeccably styled for your ensemble. Below I have listed some of my prom favourites with multi-way, smoothing and pretty lingerie co-ordinates to make you feel a-list.

The Cleo by Panache, Neve, is a perfect lingerie choice that will deliver with every wear. Although the collection includes just a Plunge t-shirt bra, short and thong the super smoothing material and moulded shape provides the perfect base for under any outfit. Available in nude and black, the bra provides optimum support, enhanced lift and exceptional shape a perfect solution for body contouring dresses.

For a little vintage charm, the ever glamorous Dentelle range from high-fashion icon Elle Macpherson delivers a prestigious and stylish presence with contouring seams and lace detailing to enhance and embellish a smaller chest. Available in a range of refined two-tone colour combinations, correspond the shades with your dress for full Hollywood impact.

Backless dresses and cut-out features have become a running trend amongst evening wear and an awkward one at that! Choosing between support and style is a dilemma we have all faced but with the new range of bra solutions and accessories from Braza Bra we’ve all become a little more inclined to opt for exposed back designs. The Braza Bra low-down, enables you to adapt your back strap and lower it by three inches for backless and low back styles. The Braza ‘Strap Keepers’ also act as another nifty invention, with seven pairs that stick to your top and diminishes exposed bra straps as the straps move with you and your dress. Perfect for slash, boat and short sleeve designs.

The Deco Shape range from Freya mirrors the extravagance of a beautiful gown whilst maintaining the practicality and support of great lingerie. The Deco shape range ensures dimensional support and control for a slim silhouette with strapless designs and multi-way

features. The Freya Deco Shape in Ivory is moulded and seamless for a flawless base whilst the delicate petal design ensures effortless glamour.

Fantastic support, multi-way features and beautiful Austrian embroidery in a soft cotton mix. The Samantha from Fantasie, ticks all the boxes on our prom must haves. The range features a side-support bra for forward projection and lift, a strapless bra, brief short and thong with the lace design throughout. This is an ideal choice for girls with larger chests. The strapless design is our favourite, created to cater for bigger boobs with great support and serious hold. Available in Black and Ivory.

For plunging and sweetheart styles, the Wonderbra Ultimate Plunge bra is a definite must. Cleverly engineered microfibre cups ensure lift and support with a discreet and low centre, that will not interfere with the cut of your dress, whilst multi-way straps allow you to the adapt the style of the bra too! Wonderbra have done it again!
