Bra Sizes Explained

by Nicola Rodney-Crook on September 11, 2015

Most women know their bra size, but do they actually know what it means? We have created the Bras Sizes Explained blog to help answer that question. Bras and Honey hope that once you have read this, that the entire bra sizing system will make more sense.

The Explanation

Your bra size is composed of two measurements, the band size and the cup size. The band size is usually shown as an even number e.g. 30, 32, 34 and etc. this is measured as the size of the ribcage under your bust. The cup size is represented by a letter or letters e.g. A, B. C, D, DD and etc. this is measured by how much bigger the breast is in relation to the ribcage measurement. So as an example your band size measure 32 inches around, and your breast measure 36 inches. So for every inch your breast measurement is bigger than your band is a cup size, which means, with a 32 inch band and a 36 in breast measurement your size will be 32D. If you need more help with bras size measuring please take a look at our Bra Fitting Guide.

The Myth

Contrary to common belief, your cup size does not represent the volume of the breasts. The size is determined in the way shown below, and your cup size is normally relative to your body shape and size. A “D” cup with a 28 band size is a much smaller volume than a “D” cup with a 40 band size.

Sister Sizes

A bra size that has the same volume measurement which is normally known as a sister size. Usually the best sister sizes are worked out as if you go down a band size, go up a cup size, also if you go up a band size, go down a cup size. As an example, if you are a 32D your sister sizes will be 30DD and 34C.

We hope this will help you understand bra sizes a bit better. Have you found Bra Sizes Explained useful? Tell us your thoughts on this subject.
